Changing conditions rather than behaviour...

I've been reading a brilliant book called 'Lean Out' by Melissa Orr and it hails looking at a different approach to women in the corporate world; rather than trying to get us to fit in to the existing mold and act like men it's calling for a new zeitgeist - an approach formed around changing conditions rather than behaviours.

An example from her book to form background of ideals.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Years ago, Denmark had an organ donor problem. Only 4.5 people in every 100 stated on their driver’s license that they agreed to be an organ donor. Thanks to one simple change, that number rose to 74 in 100.

Rather than trying to change behaviours through marketing they instead opted to update the license form from instead of ticking to donate you had to tick to not donate organs.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Therefore they changed the conditions rather than the behaviour - What changed was the way the question was asked.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

The key message here is: To achieve gender equality in the workplace, focus on changing conditions – not behaviors.⠀⠀⠀⠀

It's about things like;⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

🤍Providing flexible working conditions

🤍Childcare support

🤍Understanding what females and each individual for that matter value and work with that

🤍 Draw on the strengths of women - many of us use influence rather than authority in higher positions of power.

🤍 Enable a new platform to the way we creatively think

More than ever business is driven around value generation - woman have a key role to play in this new strategic business approach.

It's as much about the conditions changing as it is for us to realise our strengths, our relationships, our values and then using these as a means to propagate change.⠀
